Bermuda has so many wonderful Christmas traditions that I look forward to every year. This year more than ever, these traditions, although different in 2020, spark so much joy and comfort and remind me all that I have to be thankful for on this gorgeous island. Here are a few of my favorite Bermudian Christmas traditions!
During the Town of St. George’s famous holiday event, many homes in the UNESCO World Heritage Site invite Bermudians and tourists into their homes to bask in the gorgeous seasonal decor and lights. Historical re-enactors roam the candlelit streets and carolers are perched singing everyones favorite holiday songs on every corner.
On Christmas Eve, St. Peters, the oldest Anglican Church in the Western Hemisphere (originally built in 1612!) hosts a candlelit service full of lessons, carols, and the light of 70 flickering candles. Visiting is one of my favorite classic and meaningful holiday traditions.
Every year, hundreds of locals, ex-pats, and tourists gather at Elbow Beach in Paget’s Parish on Christmas Day to watch the sunrise, drink some bubbly, and take a polar plunge into the Atlantic. However, our polar plunge is a little different, because even though it’s December, the water is still perfect for swimming.
While some of these traditions might have to hold off until 2021, the sentiment behind them is still as special. I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday season!
